P2P Media Player for STB

Business Challenge

The ambitious project launched by one of the telecom majors in Australia required our team to design and implement a movie streaming service with support of P2P networking and Android-based STBs. The client was running out of time and budget as the Australian outsourcing company, which initially provided the development services, had not succeeded in making a working solution for the past year.

Solution

Our team had to completely rethink the technology stack and system design. Project team built up 20 prototypes within 2 months to pick the one that meets the performance requirements. Altogether, it took us 3 months to fully re-engineer the solution bringing on:

  • Required performance by the client – max utilization at 25% of a medium specs PC
  • Feature allowing download movies almost instantly
  • Full-fledged app for Android-based STBs working on the cheap models with a limited hardware capacity
  • DLNA-streaming across home WAN

Result

  • The re-engineered up-and-running version was released 2 times faster than the one of a previous vendor saving as much as 5 times of a budget
  • Continuous Integration (one-click deploy), 100% test automation and logging allowed for a fastest imaginable response to the product changes
  • The ongoing collaboration has brought many features since first release: http://www.filmoscop.net
